PBM therapy for Early Dry Macula Degeneration

Light Modulation®, a low-intensity phototherapy, is a new photobiomodulation technique that has long
been used in other medical fields (for example: dermatology, orthodontics). It is also used in
ophthalmology for treating dry eye syndrome.
Photobiomodulation is a therapy that uses low-intensity light capable of penetrating tissue and
activating the mitochondrial enzyme cytochrome-C oxidase. This increases cellular metabolism and
induces ATP synthesis, thus preventing cell apoptosis.
Photobiomodulation has been tested in age-related macular degeneration (both dry and wet forms)
with excellent results in terms of visual acuity and reduction of drusen volume.
It has also shown clinical improvement in cases of amblyopia, retinitis pigmentosa, and diabetic
macular oedema.
